When Your Child Changes Overnight: Understanding PANS, PANDAS, and the Nervous System
Sometimes the change in your child feels so sudden that it is hard to put into words.
One week they seem like themselves, and then seemingly overnight, everything shifts. New tics appear. Anxiety becomes intense. OCD-like behaviors begin taking over everyday routines. Your child suddenly cannot separate from you, emotions become unpredictable, or school becomes much harder than it was before.
For some families, these changes seem to follow an illness, especially a strep infection. Parents often know immediately that what they are seeing is different from typical childhood behavior or anxiety.
If this sounds familiar, PANS or PANDAS may already be part of the conversation with your child's healthcare team. At E320 Chiropractic, we don't diagnose or treat PANS or PANDAS. What we can do is look at an important part of the picture that may not have been evaluated yet: how your child's nervous system is functioning, regulating, and adapting to stress.
What Are PANS and PANDAS?
PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections. PANS, or Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome, describes a broader pattern of sudden-onset neuropsychiatric symptoms that can have a variety of potential triggers.
One of the defining features is how quickly things can change. Parents often describe a child who seemed relatively stable and then developed significant symptoms over a very short period of time.
Those changes may include sudden OCD behaviors, motor or vocal tics, intense anxiety, emotional outbursts, separation anxiety, sensory sensitivities, sleep disturbances, changes in eating, developmental regression, or a noticeable decline in handwriting and school performance.
Because many of these symptoms overlap with ADHD, anxiety disorders, OCD, Tourette syndrome, and sensory processing challenges, getting the right evaluation can be complicated. This is also why sudden or significant neurological and behavioral changes should always be discussed with your child's pediatrician or appropriate medical specialist.
Why Does an Infection Affect Some Children So Differently?
This is one of the biggest questions parents ask.
Countless children are exposed to strep and other common childhood illnesses, yet only some develop the sudden neuropsychiatric changes associated with PANS or PANDAS. Researchers are continuing to investigate the immune and neurological mechanisms involved, and there is still much to learn.
From a nervous system perspective, we are also interested in what was happening before the dramatic change occurred.
Many of the families who come to E320 Chiropractic can look back and recognize earlier signs that their child's nervous system was already having difficulty regulating. Maybe they were an extremely colicky baby, struggled with reflux or constipation, had frequent ear infections, slept poorly, seemed unusually sensitive to their environment, or had difficulty adapting to everyday stress.
Then an illness occurs and suddenly everything becomes much more obvious.
This is similar to what we call the Perfect Storm. Rather than assuming one event explains the child's entire health story, we look at how layers of stress may have accumulated throughout development and affected the nervous system's ability to adapt.
The Connection Between the Immune System and Nervous System
The immune system and nervous system are not separate systems operating independently. They are constantly communicating.
The autonomic nervous system plays an important role in coordinating functions throughout the body, including the stress response, digestion, sleep, heart rate, immune activity, and inflammation. The vagus nerve is especially important in this communication and helps the body transition out of a heightened stress response and back toward rest, recovery, and regulation.
When a child's autonomic nervous system becomes dysregulated, a pattern sometimes referred to as dysautonomia, their ability to adapt to physical, emotional, and environmental stress can become compromised.
That doesn't mean nervous system dysregulation causes PANS or PANDAS, and it doesn't mean regulating the nervous system replaces appropriate medical treatment. It does mean neurological regulation may be an important part of understanding the whole child, especially when multiple systems seem to be struggling at the same time.
Why PANS and PANDAS Care Often Requires a Team
Families dealing with PANS or PANDAS are often already working with several providers, and appropriately so.
Depending on the child's individual situation, medical care may involve evaluating and treating infections, addressing inflammation or immune concerns, managing significant psychiatric symptoms, and providing behavioral or therapeutic support.
Those pieces can be incredibly important.
Neurologically-focused chiropractic care is not intended to replace them. At E320 Chiropractic, our role is different. We focus specifically on evaluating and supporting nervous system regulation and adaptability.
Instead of asking only, "What symptom are we trying to stop?" we also ask, "How well is this child's nervous system handling everything being asked of it?"
For a child whose body already seems to be operating in a constant state of high alert, that can be an important question.
How We Evaluate Nervous System Function at E320 Chiropractic
One of the reasons we use Neurological INSiGHT Scans is that we don't want to base care solely on symptoms.
These scans give us objective information about how the nervous system is functioning and adapting. They allow us to identify patterns of autonomic dysregulation, neurological tension, energy expenditure, and adaptability that can be difficult to recognize from the outside.
The NeuroThermal Scan helps us evaluate patterns within autonomic nervous system function. The NeuroSpinal EMG helps us understand how much tension and energy the nervous system is using and how organized those patterns are. Heart Rate Variability, or HRV, gives us insight into autonomic balance, vagal tone, and the nervous system's ability to move between stress and recovery.
Together, these scans give us another piece of information about the child in front of us. They don't diagnose PANS or PANDAS, but they can help us understand whether the nervous system itself is struggling with regulation and adaptability.
Supporting Neurological Regulation Alongside Medical Care
When a child with PANS or PANDAS comes into our office, our goal is not to "treat the diagnosis." Our focus is supporting the nervous system underneath everything else.
Through gentle, neurologically-focused chiropractic care, we work to help the nervous system become more organized, adaptable, and capable of moving out of chronic fight-or-flight patterns.
This can be especially important for children who seem constantly stuck on high alert. Their bodies may have difficulty settling after stress, their emotions can escalate quickly, sleep may be disrupted, digestion may change, and everyday sensory input can suddenly become overwhelming.
As nervous system regulation improves, the goal is to give the child's body a stronger foundation for adapting to everything else happening around them, including the medical treatments and therapies that may already be part of their care.
Looking at Your Child Beyond the Diagnosis
A PANS or PANDAS diagnosis can feel overwhelming, especially when your child's symptoms seem to change almost overnight.
But your child's diagnosis is not the entirety of their health story.
At E320 Chiropractic, we want to understand what their nervous system was doing before the flare, how it is functioning now, and how well it can adapt and recover from stress. That bigger picture helps us create care that is specific to the child rather than simply responding to a list of symptoms.
If your child is navigating PANS, PANDAS, sudden-onset OCD or tics, or significant changes following an illness, their medical team should remain an important part of their care. If you also want to better understand how their nervous system is functioning, our team would be happy to help.
Through Neurological INSiGHT Scans and neurologically-focused chiropractic care, we can evaluate that often-overlooked piece of the puzzle and support your child's nervous system as part of a comprehensive approach to their health.
Because when your child suddenly doesn't seem like themselves, you deserve more than another label. You deserve a team willing to keep looking deeper for answers.
